I was provided with free passes to Cozumel Palace to facilitate this review. All opinions are my own.
As most of you who read my blog probably know, I am a lover of cruises. Most of the cruises that I sail on go to the Caribbean, and as I have cruised a bunch of times ports are starting to be repeated. Don’t get me wrong, in many locations there are a bunch of things to do and each time I go back I can and usually do try something else. But after you have been to a port 3 or 4 times, you just want to spend a day by the pool or beach, preferably with a drink in hand relaxing. Actually, scratch that. If life at home is stressful, job, wife, kids, husband, whatever, when you are on vacation, you probably want to spend time by the pool or beach just relaxing.
The question then becomes do hotels offer day passes and if so which ones? Well yes hotels do offer day passes, but only a select few. You could spend time trolling the travel boards, which I have done, to try to figure out which hotels offer day passes, or you could check out Resort For a Day. Resort for a Day works with select hotels in common cruise ports to allow cruise guests access to the hotel and its amenities for a day, and the best part is if the hotel is all inclusive you get to use the all inclusive features including drinks and food.
I tried out a Resort For a Day pass during my last cruise on the Disney Fantasy. One of the stops on my cruise was Cozumel; As I have been there numerous times, I thought that it would be a good port to relax, so I got day passes for the Cozumel Palace Hotel. When my family and I disembarked the ship, we got a taxi to take us to the hotel. Truthfully, had we known how close the hotel was to the port, we would have walked; we walked back to the ship after our day at the hotel. The Cozumel Palace Hotel is one of the Palace Resorts in Mexico and is probably the smallest one. I won’t lie, I was expecting something bigger because I have been to the hotels on the Cancun side. That said, for what we wanted to do it was perfect.
After we checked in, we went to the restaurant for breakfast. We were tired of cruise ship breakfasts at this point, so we decided to have breakfast at the hotel. That was a great decision. The choices at the hotel included a lot of Mexican specialties in addition to more Continental cuisine. My husband and I both love Mexican food so we got eggs on tortillas with refried beans and salsa. I was in heaven. They also had freshly made kiwi strawberry juice that was amazing.
After breakfast, we changed into out bathing suits and got into the pool. We spent most of our time at the hotel in or around the pool. There was a swim up bar as well as loungers in the pool, so we didn’t need to go far for anything. We got out of the pool once to try snorkeling. Unfortunately, the water was rough that day so we weren’t able to stay out very long.
As this is a resort, different activities are held during the day and they usually take place around the pool area. One of the activities we saw was a race by the bartenders and the servers carrying a full try of glasses around the entire pool area. Another activity, was pool volleyball, but that didn’t get a lot of participants as people just wanted to relax.
After about three hours of pool time, we decided to grab lunch and go. We would have stayed longer, but it wasn’t the sunniest of days. Lunch was great as well, and it included our choice of red or white wine. For dessert, I had lychee sorbet. I was really excited to see this on the buffet as I have to go all the way to Chinatown to get this at home. As we were about to leave, my husband mentions that they are about to start a cooking demonstration and that the chef will be making guacamole. He knows how much I love guacamole, but we never get it at home because he doesn’t like it. We put off leaving for a while and went to watch the chef create pico de gallo and guacamole. My daughter even got to help mash the avocados, and more importantly I got to eat the guacamole after it was made. That truly was a great way to end my day at Cozumel Palace.
You are probably wondering what all of this costs. Well, the cost per adult is $89 per person and $49 for kids 4-15. Yes, that might seem steep, but remember food and drinks, alcoholic and non alcoholic are included.
Resort For a Day has hotel passes in nine different locations including Jamaica, The Bahamas, St. Maarten and Barbados. Not all hotels are all inclusive and some include the use of a day room at the hotel and transfers to the hotel. Passes can be booked online on the company’s website. When booking, you will only pay a deposit to the company and the balance will be due when you reach the hotel.
If you have cruised the Caribbean for a while like I have and want to just relax away from the crowds, or just want to relax period, I definitely recommend Resort For a Day for a great day away.
